Active Travel in Real Estate: Nice to Have >> Must Have Amenity

July 19, 2023

In order to stay competitive, real estate developers, owners, and landlords need to provide an exceptional tenant and user experience, and as active transportation grows in North America, providing an active travel facility is no longer a nice to have - it’s a must have.

A best-in-class active travel facility can improve the health and well-being of its occupiers, reduce the building’s indirect, scope 3 emissions, and receive ActiveScore certification, complementing the world’s leading green building certifications.

To really lure employers and employees to work from the office, placemaking is essential and so is doing whatever possible to make the commute a better experience. People want to actively commute by bicycling, running, or walking, but if a building doesn't provide secure and ample parking, lockers, showers, changing rooms, and easy access, then increasingly, that building will become outdated.

Let me know if you agree or disagree! What experiences have you had when arriving to an office by bicycle, running, or walking? What do you wish was provided that wasn't? Any great active travel facility examples to share?

Friendly reminder that providing car parking is expensive and takes up a lot of space - building secure bicycle parking is not and helps nudge more people to ride.
