David Reed launched SustainMobility in 2021 after spending the prior six years working in the shared micromobility industry in various capacities, including strategy, public policy, feasibility planning, business development, management, and marketing. He takes a holistic approach and brings a unique blend of experience to his work - urban planning, non-profit community development, marketing and sales, and works with a team of affiliate consultants with experience in strategy, planning, engineering, and operations, to help you and your organization move the needle in moving people more sustainably.
In order to stay competitive, real estate developers, owners, and landlords need to provide an exceptional tenant and user experience, and as active transportation grows in North America, providing an active travel facility is no longer a nice to have - it’s a must have. A best-in-class active travel facility can improve the health and well-being of its occupiers, reduce the building’s indirect, scope 3 emissions, and receive ActiveScore certification, complementing the world’s leading green building certifications.
With funding from the Shell Foundation, David supported Three Stones International as a sustainable mobility subject matter expert in their independent research study on the socioeconomic impacts of transitioning from petrol-powered motorbikes to electric two-wheelers for transportation and employment in Rwanda and Kenya. The study concluded with a final report released in May 2022.
A first of its kind partnership - supporting the proposal, planning, negotiation, and launch of a university subsidized e-bike program in partnership with Penn State University from Fall 2020 through Fall 2021, resulting in a long-term partnership and successful program with high usage.
In a presentation given in October 2022, David showcased how the explosive growth of e-bikes and demand for micromobility as a whole has led to creative business models, financing options, and government incentives to increase adoption. David provided a unique global, regional, and local perspective on the opportunities and challenges that the e-bike and micromobility industry as a whole face now and in the future, and why some governments are prioritizing e-bikes as a way to fight climate change.
In early 2022, SustainMobility began working with Slidr, an all-electric shared vehicle service, to expand it’s partnerships with municipalities, transit agencies, and university campuses in untapped markets, by revising its brand strategy and marketing approach, building new pipeline, and creating comprehensive proposals that helped the company grow.
In August 2021, the City of Portland, Maine selected Tandem Mobility to plan, operate and launch a bike share system in collaboration with the City and local partners. David worked closely with all stakeholders prior to the launch including: securing the needed bike share system sponsorships; identifying bike parking 'hubs' where bikes are checked out-checked in and locked; and developing the system's naming and branding. Portland Bikeshare launched on August 15, 2022 with a phased roll-out of both stations and bikes. During the first month, over 800 different users took approximately 2,200 rides.
From 2021-2023, David worked with Movatic, a software platform for micromobility, empowering entrepreneurs, small businesses, and real estate companies to launch and manage their own fleet of bikes, scooters, bike lockers, and more. He helped set up sales, marketing, and operational processes, and streamlined the order and fulfillment process to enable a self-service setup and launch of an e-commerce store.
Established 50+ public and private bike and scooter share systems, in partnership with small and mid-sized cities, universities, and real estate companies, including Rochester, NY; Fort Collins, CO; Salem, MA; Asbury Park, NJ; Penn State University; Princeton University; CBRE, and Colliers.
